From 1900 until now, "Young's" has meant furnishings for the home, plus some other merchandise for industry and business. In the early days, that meant clothes boilers and hardware. Building material, outboard motors, oil stoves and toys were standard hardware items in the years the business was a hardware store in downtown Alpena.
Citizenry of Alpena bought nuts and bolts, ice skates and fishing tackle from the original store, facing Second Avenue in downtown Alpena. The original store was located between the old Montgomery Wards store (Center Building) downtown, and a corner drugstore at the corner of Second and Chisholm.
Eventually the store moved to 107 W. Chisholm Street, where Joe Young, then Jay Young operated the business under the name "Huron Hardware" for many years. The location on Chisholm Street was one that many current residents might remember. Hoover vacs in the window, plus an assortment of Frigidaire appliances started the trend to a more home appliance direction. Jungers oil heaters, Monarch wood and gas ranges made their way into many homes in the 40's and 50's. Carol and Jay Young made the decision to exit the hardware business entirely in the 60's, and eventually added Corning glass top stoves, Amana RadaRanges and other brands followed. With service technicians Larry Frechette, and eventually Dave Habermehl, Young's became a solid appliance store that made a name in quality service.
The next move was one to 2207 U.S. 23 South (where Continental Rental now conducts business) where Young's expanded further. Sony electronics, RCA television, and other brands were added to the mix. Competition was fierce between competitors Puff's, B&B Sales, Town Radio, Magnavox, Doran Electric, Gately's Furniture, Tempo, Western Auto, and the utility companies, as well as Sears and Montgomery Wards.
In 1977 Young's made its move to a newer location further south on U.S. 23 where it's located currently. After several renovations, the business has expanded to a 33,000 square foot facility that boasts an expanded service department headed up by Rick Muszynski (long time service manager). There are dedicated departments that are market leaders in audio/video display and installation, flooring by Carpet One, sleep section featuring TempurPedic and Sealy Posturepedic. The appliance department recently through a major overhaul by adding Bosch. The appliance showroom now displays vignettes of Frigidaire, KitchenAid, GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Asko, Wolf, SubZero, Samsung & Electrolux. The electronics department features Sony, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, LG, Sharp, Toshiba and Samsung. Recently, Young/s added a full line of Ashley furniture, Broyhill and Lane Furniture to blend in the flooring business and home theater business, it just seems a natural fit.
As a member of BrandSource and HES (Home Electronic Specialists), Young's maintains an edge in buying power and alignment with specialists in the home furnishings field. Young's now has arrangements with the leading cabinet designers in the area to work with them in creating a new kitchen, or just updating your current home.

With Alpena's only full service and delivery department, they always do more for your money, while saving you money.
